After the Black Hawk War ended, settlers quickly moved into the area, making it one of the last regions of Illinois to be developed. Rock Falls was officially founded in 1867 by A.P. Smith, an entrepreneur who recognized the importance of water power for industrial growth. After acquiring water rights along the Rock River, Smith helped lay the foundation for the city’s development as a manufacturing center.
