After acquiring water rights along the Rock River, Smith helped lay the foundation for the city’s development as a manufacturing center. His efforts attracted a variety of businesses over the years, including Charter Gas Engine Company, Lawrence Brothers Incorporated, and National Manufacturing, all of which contributed to the economic growth and industrial identity of Rock Falls.

Rock Falls, Illinois is a scenic destination for outdoor recreation, offering 17 parks spanning over 540 acres. These parks provide something for everyone, including baseball diamonds, tennis courts, soccer fields, playgrounds, and picnic pavilions. The Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park runs through the city and stretches more than 100 miles across five counties. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s a local favorite for canoeing, horseback riding, and scenic exploration.
