Before its incorporation, the community now known as Silvis, Illinois was originally called Pleasant Valley. When the city was officially incorporated in 1906, it was renamed after early settler Richard Shippen Silvis, whose family operated the Silvis Mining Company. He played a key role in the area’s early development, particularly by helping expand the railroad system, which was essential for transporting coal in and out of the region.
Silvis, Illinois is a community that places a strong emphasis on safety and civic pride. It is home to one of the six 911 call centers in Rock Island County and a dedicated fire department that has been serving the city since 1908.
